Calls to action hearing at the Philanthropy Building Momentum on Climate Justice event in New York in July during the High-Level Political Forum.
Collectively, we urge those interested in embracing a climate justice approach to:
- Apply principles of gender equity, indigenous rights, human rights more broadly, and transparency to all of our climate change efforts
- Give greater attention to climate justice within our SDG efforts
- Give greater attention to programming for indigenous peoples, and land rights, and the link between indigenous rights and climate change
- Be more intentional in cross-pollinating our movements, and particularly ensure that addressing climate change (in terms of adaptation and mitigation) is more prominent in events and processes around women’s rights and gender equality
- Build a stronger inventory of what’s working on climate justice, adaptation and resilience and use these powerful examples in our communications
- Use philanthropic resources to prioritize the furthest behind, and leverage this to encourage public funds for the same
- More effectively link investible climate justice activities with markets, businesses, and investors who will support them – and be sure that all so-called green and renewable energy projects take into account human rights principles such as free, prior and informed consent
- Support the building of “bridges” between grassroots organizations and the global climate funding sources that are often challenging for them to access
- As the philanthropy sector, trust grassroots women’s organizations with funds as much as you trust them with implementation
As Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim said, climate justice requires courage, capacity, and stronger coalitions – and we believe that those of you would took the time to join our event must be in the forefront of making climate justice a reality.
