Only 5% of local foundations are registered as societies and community-based organizations. Under the Societies Act, a society is “any club, company, partnership or other association of ten or more persons, whatever its nature or object, established in Kenya or having its headquarters or chief place of business in Kenya.” A branch of a society also qualifies as a society. Societies are registered and regulated by the Registrar of Societies
