India is one of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries which has grown into an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. BRICS countries come from Asia, Africa, Europe and America and all members of the G20. Together, they account for 26.46% of world land area, 42.58% of world population, 13.24% of World Bank voting power and 14.91% of IMF quota shares.

In September 2017, BRICs adopted the ‘BRICS Leaders’ Xiamen Declaration,’ reaffirming their commitment to fully implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, committing to enhance BRICS cooperation on climate change and expand green financing, and agreeing “to take concrete actions to advance result-oriented cooperation in such areas as prevention of air and water pollution, waste management and biodiversity conservation,” among others. BRICS Agriculture Research Platform established in India in 2016 is expected to perform a vital role that promote sustainable agri-development, food security, and poverty alleviation through strategic cooperation.
